I got this question by my college director while I was bunking the class.

Query is from Systems of Engine Lubrication in chapter Lubrication and Lubricants of Automotive Engine Design

Correct option is (b) strainer

For explanation I would say: The strainer is connected just below the oil pump the oil is sucked in from the strainer. This guards the pump against the entry of grit. The strainer has mesh to filter the oil and grits.
