How is the drive system between the engine and gearbox in modern starter motor?

(a) Shaft drive

(b) Belt drive

(c) Belt drive or connected directly to the flywheel

(d) Connected directly to the flywheel

The question was asked in final exam.

My enquiry is from Testing the Starting System in section Starting System of Automotive Engine Design

The correct answer is (c) Belt drive or connected directly to the flywheel

To explain: It can be the belt-driven or connected directly to the flywheel between the engine and the gearbox. The former needs less amount of copper and iron.
