Circumferential and longitudinal direction of valve experience which stress?

The question was posed to me by my school principal while I was bunking the class.

The query is from Poppet Valves topic in section Valve Timing Technologies of Automotive Engine Design

Correct choice is (d) Thermal stress

The best I can explain: Thermal stresses in the circumferential and longitudinal directions due to the large temperature gradient from the centre of the head to its periphery and from the crown to the stem.
