Why are IIT (Image Intensifier Tubes) used in HMD?

(a) Clarity of outside world scene

(b) Provide night vision capabilities

(c) Terrain mapping

(d) Compensation for parallax errors

The question was posed to me by my school teacher while I was bunking the class.

The origin of the question is Helmet Mounted Displays in chapter Displays and Man-Machine Interaction of Avionics

The correct answer is (b) Provide night vision capabilities

The best I can explain: IIT is an image intensification device which complements the infrared viewing system by providing night vision. The image form the Image Intensifier Tube is a phosphor screen which emits green light in the centre of the visual band where the eye is most sensitive.
