I got this question during an online exam.

My question is taken from Open Hearth Surface in chapter Metal Furnace and Practice of Casting-Forming-Welding II

Correct answer is (a) Nitrogen

Explanation: The contact of steel with the nitrogen gas causes the steel to become brittle. This was one of the difficulties which was later overcome by open hearth furnace.
