In the manufacture of Acetylene (C2H2) by Wulff Process, Which of the following methods is involved?

(a) Heating of copper tube

(b) Use of Calcium Carbide

(c) Reforming

(d) Pyrolsis of hydrocarbons

This question was posed to me during an internship interview.

My question is from Inorganic Chemicals in section Chemical Industries of Chemical Technology

Correct answer is (d) Pyrolsis of hydrocarbons

Explanation: Except option ‘Pyrolsis of hydrocarbons’, The others also yield C2H2 but Wulff process is where Pyrolysis occurs.

Eg: From propane –  C3H8 → C2H2 + C2H4 + CH4 + CO + H2 + CO2
