In timber roof figure shown below, the part represented by number 1 denotes _________

(a) collar beam

(b) principal rafters

(c) queen posts

This question was addressed to me in an interview for job.

My doubt stems from Wooden and Steel Roof Truss topic in section Different Type Roofs, R.C.C of Civil Engineering Drawing

Right answer is (b) principal rafters

For explanation I would say: The principal rafters are linked by a collar beam supported by a pair of arch braces, which stiffen the structure and help to transmit the weight of the roof down through the principal rafters to the supporting wall.
