The process which is responsible for spreading of turbulent flows in the flow direction is __________

(b) Entrainment

(c) Turbulent mixing

(d) Turbulent generation

This question was addressed to me in a job interview.

My question is taken from Free and Wall Turbulence in chapter Turbulence Modelling of Computational Fluid Dynamics

Right answer is (b) Entrainment

Easiest explanation: While turbulent flows burst out of its region, fluid from the surrounding is drawn into the turbulent region. This is the process of entrainment. This is the cause of spreading of turbulent flows in the flow direction.
