Which method is best for series traction motors?

(a) Rheostatic armature control

(b) Shunted armature control

(c) Series parallel control method

(d) Any method can be employed

The question was asked by my school principal while I was bunking the class.

Right option is (c) Series parallel control method

For explanation: Series-parallel control method is superior to the rheostatic control insofar as efficiency is concerned. However, it is limited to two speed steps. The method is commonly employed for speed control of series traction motors.
