Cold cracks can be prevented by __________

(a) uniform heating

(b) by use of low hydrogen electrode

(c) faster cooling

(d) slower cooling

The question was posed to me by my school principal while I was bunking the class.

My doubt is from Weld Defects & Types of Joints in division Welded Connections of Design of Steel Structures

The correct answer is (b) by use of low hydrogen electrode

Easiest explanation: Cold cracks occur under room temperature run parallel to but under the weld in base metal. Use of low hydrogen electrodes along with proper pre-heating and post-heating may reduce possibility of cold cracks.
