I had been asked this question during an internship interview.

This is a very interesting question from Properties of Convolution Codes and Reed-Solomon Codes in chapter Channel Coding of Digital Communications

Correct answer is (a) Increase in complexity

The best explanation: Soft decisions require more storage and it also increases the complexity. For this reason soft decisions are preferred less when compared to hard decisions.
