I got this question during an online exam.

My question is based upon Power Factor Control of Synchronous Machines topic in chapter Synchronous Machines of Electrical Machines

Right choice is (a) lagging

For explanation: Adding synchronous motor will improve the pf of the system but then the induction motor will still work at lagging pf only.
