(b) lagging pf

(c) zero pf

This question was addressed to me by my college director while I was bunking the class.

This intriguing question comes from Power Flow Through an Inductive Impedance topic in section Efficiency and Regulation of Electrical Machines

Correct answer is (b) lagging pf

The best I can explain: An under excited synchronous motor will act as a sink of the reactive power and it will operate at leading pf.
