The condition for a quarter wave transformer is

(a) Zo^2 = Zin ZL

(b) Zo = Zin ZL

(c) ZL^2 = Zin Zo

(d) Zo = Zin

The question was asked by my college professor while I was bunking the class.

I want to ask this question from Transmission Line Equations in chapter Transmission Lines of Electromagnetic Theory

Right answer is (a) Zo^2 = Zin ZL

The best I can explain: The quarter wave transformer represents L = λ/4. In this case, the characteristic impedance is the geometric mean of the input and load impedances. Thus Zo^2 = Zin ZL is the required condition.
