This question was posed to me at a job interview.

The origin of the question is Desalination of Brackish Water in division Water and its Treatment of Engineering Chemistry II

Right choice is (d) Water

To explain I would say: The ion-exchange membrane are electrically conductive and impermeable to  water flow, even under pressure. Electrons can easily flow through these membranes.
