I have been asked this question during a job interview.

This is a very interesting question from Cast Irons topic in section Non Ferrous Materials of Engineering Material & Metallurgy

Right choice is (b) Grey iron

Best explanation: Silicon causes cementite to behave in an unstable manner, which decomposes and releases graphite. If there is a high-silicon presence, more graphite is released and makes it a grey iron. If low-silicon is available, then it becomes a white iron.
