How long should a steel component be heat treated before nitriding?

(a) 5-20 hours

(b) 40-100 hours

(c) 100-200 hours

(d) 300-500 hours

I have been asked this question by my school teacher while I was bunking the class.

I want to ask this question from Nitriding, Cyaniding and Carbonitriding in division Heat Treatment of Engineering Material & Metallurgy

Right choice is (b) 40-100 hours

Easiest explanation: Before nitriding is carried out, it is required that the workpieces are heat treated to produce the required properties in the core. The parts are heat treated at around 500^oC for a period of 40 to 100 hours. This process takes place in a gas-tight chamber through which ammonia gas is allowed to circulate.
