How are the different sections of a split pattern joined?

(a) Weld

(b) Locknut

(c) Dowel pin

(d) Flange coupling

This question was addressed to me in final exam.

This intriguing question comes from Pattern Making topic in division Testing of Materials, Foundry & Powder Metallurgy of Engineering Material & Metallurgy

The correct choice is (c) Dowel pin

For explanation I would say: A split pattern is preferred over a solid pattern as it is easier to remove from the mold. Two or three different sections are produced separately in this process. These separate sections are then joined together by using dowel pins.
