The correct answer is:

(a) decreases

During the expansion process (also known as the power stroke) in an internal combustion engine, the temperature decreases as the combustion gases expand and do work on the piston. After the expansion, during the exhaust or release process, the temperature drops rapidly as the exhaust gases are expelled from the cylinder, taking away the heat generated during combustion. This rapid temperature drop occurs because the gases are rapidly released and no longer undergo compression or combustion.
