Why are opto isolators normally used between the microcontrollers and the ULN2803?

(a) to optimize the current

(b) to reduce the back emf

(c) to increase the current

(d) to increase the voltage

I had been asked this question by my school teacher while I was bunking the class.

Right answer is (b) to reduce the back emf

To explain: Opto isolators are used between the microcontrollers and the ULN2803 chips in order to decrease the back emf from the ULN2803 and to save the microcontrollers for a long time.
