To avoid commutation failure

(a) circuit turn-off time must be greater than the thyristor turn-off time

(b) circuit turn-off time must be lesser than the thyristor turn-off time

I had been asked this question by my school principal while I was bunking the class.

The correct answer is (a) circuit turn-off time must be greater than the thyristor turn-off time

For explanation: If the thyristor turn off time is more than the circuit turn off time, the circuit will be turned off and the thyristor will keep conducting, which is not at all desirable.
