I have been asked this question during a job interview.

My enquiry is from Applications of Power Electronics-1 topic in portion Applications, Cycloconverters and  Miscellaneous of Power Electronics

Right answer is (c) both inverter and rectifier

For explanation I would say: Rectifier to converter the dc from the battery to ac. Inverter to charge the battery from mains.
