This question was posed to me by my college professor while I was bunking the class.

I need to ask this question from Fourier Series Properties in chapter Fourier Series of Signals and Systems

The explanation is: The integration attenuates the magnitude of the high frequency components of the signal. High frequency contributors cause sharp details such as occurring at the points of discontinuity. Hence, integration smoothens the signal, hence it is called a smoothening operation.
