The question was asked by my school principal while I was bunking the class.

My enquiry is from File Management Systems in portion Application Software Packages & Business Data Processing of Computer Fundamentals

Right answer is (c) extension

To explain I would say: Extensions are added to filenames. The extensions help in identifying the file type.
