I had been asked this question in an internship interview.

Origin of the question is Whirlpool Algorithm in section Message Authentication Codes, Whirlpool Algorithm and Key Management and Distribution of Cryptograph & Network Security

Correct option is (a) 256 bits

To explain I would say: The length is expressed as a 256 bit unsigned integer, with most significant byte being the leftmost.
