Which of the following states of matter has the maximum value of mean free path?

(a) Gas

(b) Solid

(c) Liquid

(d) Plasma

This question was addressed to me by my school teacher while I was bunking the class.

Question is taken from Kinetic Theory topic in chapter Kinetic Theory of Physics – Class 11

Right answer is (a) Gas

To elaborate: The atoms of gas have the most interatomic space and can therefore travel freely. This is why they travel longer distances without colliding and are therefore said to have the maximum mean free path.
