Two simple pendulums of the same length are released from 10° & 20° respectively. Select the correct statement.

(a) The second pendulum have will have a double time period than that of the first

(b) They both will reach the mean position at the same time

(c) The first pendulum will have a double time period than that of the second

(d) Their maximum speed will be the same

I had been asked this question at a job interview.

My query is from Oscillations topic in portion Oscillations of Physics – Class 11

Correct answer is (b) They both will reach the mean position at the same time

Easiest explanation: Their time period will be the same as length is the same. So time to reach the mean position from their respective extremes will be the same. Therefore they will reach the mean position at the same time. They both have different potential energies at the start, so their maximum speeds will be different. Another way to look at this is that the speed of the 2nd pendulum should be more as it has to cover greater arc length in the same amount of  time.
