What is the oxidation state of Mn in KMnO4?

I got this question in an interview for job.

My doubt is from Periodic Trends in Properties of Elements in portion Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties of Chemistry – Class 11

The correct answer is (c) 7

For explanation: The total charge of the compound KMnO4 is zero as it is a neutral and stable compound. As we know the oxidation states of K and O are +1 and -2 respectively. So +1 + Mn charge + 4(-2) = 0; Mn charge = 7.
