Which is not used as an absorbent in adsorption chromatography?

(a) Silica gel

(b) Alumina

(c) Potassium permanganate

(d) Starch

I got this question in homework.

My question is based upon Methods of Purification of Organic Compounds topic in chapter Organic Chemistry – Basic Principles and Technique of Chemistry – Class 11

Right choice is (c) Potassium permanganate

To explain I would say: A good adsorbent requires large surface area, should be easily available, less expensive. They should also be thermally stable, and have high abrasion resistance. Silica, alumina, and starch possesses these characteristics while potassium permanganate does not, so it cannot be an adsorbent.
