Which of the following is the most preferred reagent for reducing nitroethane to ethylamine?

(a) H2/Pt

(b) Sn/HCl

(c) Fe/HCl

(d) Zn/HCl

The question was posed to me during an interview.

Origin of the question is Preparation of Amines in division Amines of Chemistry – Class 12

Correct choice is (c) Fe/HCl

The best I can explain: Reduction of nitroalkanes with iron scrap and HCl is preferred because of the formation of FeCl2 which gets hydrolysed to release HCl during the reaction. Thus, only a small amount of HCl is required to initiate the reaction.
