What happens to the surface roughness if oxygen gas is introduced in the gap?

The question was posed to me in unit test.

My question comes from EDM-Surface Integrity in chapter Thermal Processes of Advanced Machining

To explain: In EDM, surface roughness increases with the supply of oxygen gas in gaps.
