To demodulate a USB SSB signal, the receiver must ________

(a) be set to USB mode

(b) reinsert the carrier

(c) be set to USB mode and reinsert the carrier

(d) have low-fidelity

The question was asked by my college director while I was bunking the class.

This interesting question is from Spectrum of AM SC Waves topic in chapter Side Band Techniques of Analog Communications

Correct answer is (c) be set to USB mode and reinsert the carrier

For explanation I would say: Single side band suppresses the carrier and uses only one of the two sidebands. The two sidebands carry exactly the same information and thus removing a sideband does not have any effect on the signal. To demodulate upper sideband of signal it is necessary that the receiver must be set to USB mode and have the ability to reinsert the carrier.
