Which of the following forms a heat barrier in the process of carbonisation?

(d) Thin plastic zone formed by caking coal

I got this question by my college director while I was bunking the class.

My question is taken from Secondary Solid Fuels topic in chapter Fuels and Combustion of Engineering Chemistry II

The best explanation: The plastic zone so formed by the caking coal results in a considerable temperature gradient. There may be a drop of about 250 ^oC across half an inch thickness.
