In the figure given below, the resistance R1 is used to

(a) keep the gate circuit voltage drop minimum

(b) limit the gate current to a safe value when R2 = 0

(c) limit the gate current to a safe value when R2 is very large

(d) allow the gate power dissipation

I got this question in a job interview.

The doubt is from Firing Circuits-2 topic in chapter Other Circuits of Power Electronics

Correct option is (b) limit the gate current to a safe value when R2 = 0

Explanation: As R2 is the variable, R1 makes sure that the current does not exceed the maximum value when R2 is kept at zero position.
