Which of the following is not refined by zone refining method?

(a) Germanium

(b) Silicon

I had been asked this question at a job interview.

My question comes from Refining topic in portion General Principles and Processes of Isolation of Elements of Chemistry – Class 12

The correct choice is (d) Gold

For explanation I would say: Zone refining is based on the principle that the impurities are more soluble in the molten state than in the solid state of the metal. Semiconductors such as germanium, silicon and gallium are refined by zone refining. Gold is generally refined via electrolysis.
