Which among the following material is plated on the cylinder liner to improve the resistance to corrosion and wear?

(a) Cast iron

(b) Chromium

(c) Zinc

(d) Lead

The question was asked by my college professor while I was bunking the class.

I want to ask this question from Engine Components topic in chapter Basic Engine Components of Automotive Engine Design

The correct answer is (b) Chromium

For explanation I would say: The liners are exposed to ammonia vapor at about 500 degrees centigrade and then quenched. Chromium plating improves the resistance to wear and corrosion. The use of chromium with aluminum alloy results in increased thermal efficiency.
