(a) ellipse

(b) hyperbola

(c) circle

(d) parabola

I have been asked this question in an international level competition.

I'm obligated to ask this question of Sections of Cones topic in division Section of Solids of Engineering Drawing

Correct answer is (b) hyperbola

The best I can explain: If a cone made to cut by a plane parallel to its axis and some distance away from it the section formed is hyperbola. If the section plane is perpendicular to axis the section is circle. If section plane passes through apex the section formed is a triangle.
