The question was asked by my school teacher while I was bunking the class.

The doubt is from Gradient of a Function and Conservative Field topic in chapter Vector Differential Calculus of Engineering Mathematics

Right choice is (c) scalar

For explanation I would say: Gradient is taken only on a scalar field. After taking gradient of a scalar field it becomes a vector. It is found by taking the partial differentiation.
