In which iron(Fe) state myoglobin binds to the oxygen?

(a) Fe^2+

(b) Fe^3+

(c) Fe

(d) Fe^4+

The question was posed to me during an online exam.

I'm obligated to ask this question of Fibrous and Globular Proteins in section Biomolecules and Catalysis of Life Sciences

Right answer is (a) Fe^2+

The best explanation: Myoglobin only in the Fe^2+ state can bind with oxygen as the iron atom has six co-ordination bonds, 4 in the flat and two in a perpendicular state to the porphyrin ring. The oxygen binding site is present on the other side of six coordination position.
