Which of the following isomeric alcohols is the most soluble in water?

(a) n-Butyl alcohol

(b) Isobutyl alcohol

(c) sec-Butyl alcohol

(d) tert-Butyl alcohol

This question was posed to me by my school teacher while I was bunking the class.

My query is from Alcohols and Phenols in chapter Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers of Chemistry – Class 12

Right option is (d) tert-Butyl alcohol

For explanation: tert-Butyl alcohol is the most heavily branched isomer and is tightly packed compared to the others. This decreases the effective surface area of the alkyl part which is hydrophobic in nature.
