I had been asked this question in an interview for job.

The correct answer is (c) rectangle

Best explanation: Cylinder is formed by rotating the rectangle about one of its sides which is said to axis further. So if the cutting plane is parallel to axis the section formed is rectangle and if plane is perpendicular to axis it gives circle.
